Children's Constitution Day
Children's Constitution Day at Skt. Josefs’ Kindergarten 4th June
Friday the 4th of June, we held the Children's Constitution Day. The day began with decorating with flags at the playground. The oldest children had prepared a small play "Three Billy Goats Gruff (De 3 Bukke Bruse)", which they performed for the youngest children. Afterwards, we all sang together, and a constitutional speech was given for all the children.
In weeks 22 and 23, the kindergarten will work with democracy. The pedagogues will talk to the children about laws and rights - at a child level. We will bring a big, thick book for circle time, where all the laws are written: we will look at all the letters, and the children are invited to share their thoughts about "what does a law mean?".
We will talk about what adults can and cannot do and what adults should help the children with. We will talk about democracy, and what it means. We will vote, e.g., on which song we should sing for the circle time, which games we should play, or what we should have for lunch. The children practice understanding what it means when "the majority decides" - that even though one have said that they want a banana for lunch, it is not certain that this is what we should have.
The pedagogues also told the children, that in Denmark there is democracy for everyone, and that children have rights too and can be part of deciding. The adults must take good care of all children and all children must feel good. The adults must not hit children nor use bad language or yell at them. The adults need to comfort children, when they are upset, and it is also important to remember that one can also be comforted by one’s friends in kindergarten.
The day ended with ice cream from the Parents' Association :-)
